Data are presented on the diet of Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea borealis (Cory, 1881) resulting from stomach investigations based on 18 birds from Hierro (Canary Islands), 5 from Selvagem Grande (Selvagens or Salvage Islands), 2 from São Miguel and 1 from São Jorge (Azores), collected between 1977 and 1981. These data confirm the general idea that this shearwater feeds principally on fish and squid. The glandular stomachs of 9 birds from Hierro contained significant quantities of food, varying in wet weight from ca. 4-40 gm; in four cases more or less complete squids were present, all Ommastrephes bartrami (Le Sueur, 1821). In addition, the gizzards of all 26 birds, except one, contained fragments of squid beaks belonging to 12 species. Several of... |

From December 2003 to September 2004, benthic macroinvertebrates (BM), fishes, water and sediment were collected quarterly at six stations in two streams of the upper São Francisco River basin, south-eastern Brazil. We evaluated the ecological conditions, habitat diversity, water quality, composition and structure of BM communities, as well as the food habits of the local fish fauna. By applying a protocol for rapid characterization of ecological conditions and habitat diversity, three of the sampled localities were classified as "pristine" while the others stations were considered "altered". A well oxygenated water with near neutral pH and low electric conductivity (< 0.01 mS/cm) and nutrient concentrations (< 0.08 mg/l total P and < 0.90 mg/l... |

ABSTRACT The trophic plasticity of most fish species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 in response to environmental changes and resource availability is high. This work evaluates the differences in the trophic characteristics of two congeneric species, Astyanax taeniatus (Jenyns, 1842) and Astyanax lacustris (Lütken, 1875), in Rio das Velhas Basin, which is highly impacted by the discharge of sewage from the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (MRBH). Eight sites were sampled and grouped into three regions: upper course (two sites upstream of the MRBH); middle course (three sites located in the middle portion of the Rio das Velhas, region with greater influence of the MRBH), and lower course (three sites downstream of the MRBH). Samples of fish and... |

The lionfish (Pterois volitans) has established in the Colombian Caribbean coast. Its presence was reported for the first time in continental Colombia in 2009, but its abundance has increased significantly by the end of 2009 and 2010, being now common to find it in the entire Colombian Caribbean. The present study evaluates the diet components of the lionfish in Santa Marta and Tayrona National Park. Five teleost families (Apogonidae, Gobiidae, Serranidae, Clupeidae, and Pomacentridae) and some crustaceans were identified as components of the diet of the lionfish. Some of these organisms belong to families of ecological and economic importance, which can have impacts on populations of local fish as has happened in other latitudes. Consequently, this... |

The Eastern Beaufort Sea (EBS) beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) population are an important traditional food for the Inuit of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Northwest Territories (NT) Canada. In 2014, over 30 beluga whales were harvested at Ulukhaktok, NT, the first occurrence for a large harvest in the area. Unlike observations from the established beluga harvest monitoring in the Mackenzie Estuary, these belugas had numerous prey and prey items in their stomachs. Our study objectives were to combine traditional and local knowledge (TLK) from beluga hunters with the analysis of dissected stomachs to identify EBS beluga diet, feeding behaviour, as well as gain insights into potential drivers of the event. TLK holders witnessed foraging behaviors such as... |

Previous studies have shown that food amount influence fish otolith structure, opacity and shape and that diet composition has an effect on otolith chemical composition. This study investigated the potential correlation between diet and otolith shape in 5 wild marine fish species by addressing 4 complementary questions. First, is there a global relationship between diet and otolith shape? Second, which prey categories are involved in this relationship? Third, what are the respective contributions of food quantity and relative composition to diet–otolith shape co-variation? Fourth, is diet energetic composition related to otolith shape? For each species, we investigated how otolith shape varies with diet. These questions were tackled by describing diet in... |

Feeding preferences of Celtic Sea fishes were investigated using a database of stomach content records, collected between 1977 and 1994. The diet of cod Gadus morhua, hake Merluccius merluccius, megrim Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, whiting Merlangius merlangus and saithe Pollachius virens changed markedly as the animals grew larger, and although large predators generally chose larger bodied prey, the variability of prey sizes consumed also increased. Large predators continued to select small, low value, benthic prey (e.g. Callionymus spp. and Trisopterus spp.) which were easier to catch, rather than larger, more energy lucrative pelagic prey (e.g. mackerel Scomber scombrus), even though these pelagic prey-fishes were nearly always available and were often... |

In order to define the structure of trophic network of Ichkeul Lake in Tunisia, diet of main teleost fish species was determined during two seasons, wet and dry. A total of 491 stomachs from 16 teleost species was analyzed. The analysis revealed spatial variability (East under marine influence and West with more continental effect) and temporal one (wet and dry seasons). Based on stomach contents, nine trophic groups were revealed, including eight monospecific groups. The main prey are mudflat snails (Hydrobia ventrosa, H. acuta), bivalves (Abra alba, Cerastoderma glaucum), amphipods and isopods, as well as seagrass (Potamogeton pectinatus, Ruppia cirrhosa) and water brackish algae (Ulva spp. and Chaetomorpha spp., Cladophora sp., Polysiphonia sp.). |

At the time of a survey of the biology of Lithognathus mormyrus and its feeding ecology and dynamies, in the region of Algiers and Annaba, preys ingested by this species were determined from stomach contents. Food was composed entirely of benthic organisms. It has been counted more than 45 species-preys distributed in 9 taxonomic classes. The quantitative analysis of these preys and the variation of the food regime according to a certain number of parameters were treated. The young individuals fed on small Tellinids bivalves and adults, on Crustaceans Amphipods, Cumaceans, Decapodes, Molluscs, sea urchins and Polychaetes. The feeding of this fish was rich and varied in preys species and little among them were preferential. The three main sources of food... |

Sharks present strong intraspecific changes in feeding habits, which may vary according to size, geographic location and season. This study analyzed the stomach contents of 52 juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (25 females and 27 males) caught by artisanal vessels in the Gulf of Nicoya. Regarding the organisms found in the stomachs, 41.07 % were teleost fish, 30.36 % mollusks and 28.57 % crustaceans. Mollusks presented the highest Relative Importance Index (RII) (43.05 %), followed by teleost fish (41.37 %) and crustaceans (15.58 %). Squids (Loliginidae) were the items with the greatest RII (32.57 %). By means of the Pianka index, a relatively low overlap between sexes was identified, suggesting a spatial sexual segregation and, in consequence, an... |

Understanding drivers of trophic partitioning at the community level is an essential prerequisite to the establishment of ecosystem-based management of fisheries. In this study, we identify drivers of trophic partitioning within a community of epipelagic fish and a community of deep-water fishes off Reunion Island. Effects of intrinsic (species identity, etc.) and environmental variables (fishing zone, month) on stomach content composition and stable isotope ratios were tested using regression trees and linear models respectively. Our results demonstrated firstly an independence of both communities, with very few common prey although they occurred in similar localities, and secondly, very different patterns of resources partitioning among each community.... |

The predominant occurrence of the species Sarasinula marginata (Semper, 1885) in 31 lots, all proceeding from the stomach contents of the snakes Dipsas Laurenri, 1768 was determined. A species still not determined of Novovaginula Thiele, 1931 was represented in 10 lots and in a living collected lot (with only one specimen, not mature). One-third species, Potamojanuarius fuscus (Heynemann, 1885) is represented only in a lot of slugs collected alive (seven specimens) and was confirmed in a lot of four specimens, this of the Museum of Zoology, University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo. All the other lots were sent by F.Q. Alves, Department of Zoology, State University of São Paulo (UNESP), Botucatu, São Paulo. |

The ecology, particularly the trophic ecology, of the Critically Endangered goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara (Lichtenstein 1822) in French Guiana (France) is relatively unknown. Such information would provide a better understanding of the role that goliath groupers play in the marine ecosystem of French Guiana. This study focused on the feeding ecology of the goliath grouper through stomach-content and stable-isotope analyses of captured specimens. The dietary composition of goliath groupers in French Guiana was similar to that of goliath groupers from other areas of the species' range. However, in French Guiana, goliath groupers exhibited an ontogenetic shift in diet that has not been demonstrated elsewhere. Crustaceans, primarily crabs, were dominant... |

Three species of shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817), F. paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) (Penaeidae) and Macrobrachium acanthurus (Wiegmann, 1836) (Palaemonidae) were sampled at the Imboassica lagoon (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), in order to estimate the overlap of dietary niches and electivity of their prey, through the analysis of the fauna associated with the macroalgae Chara and of the benthic fauna on the sediment. The overlap of dietary niches was estimated using five indexes. A total of 495 F. brasiliensis, 131 F. paulensis and 102 M. acanthurus stomachs were examined. The results of the different indexes of niche overlap exhibited the same general trend in the three species, indicating a high degree of homogeneity in the diet... |

The spatial and temporal structure of predator-prey relationships in the Celtic Sea was investigated for 4 commercially important predator species (cod Gadus morhua, hake Merluccius merluccius, megrim Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, and whiting Merlangius merlangus) using stomach-content and bottom-trawl survey data for the period 1982 to 1995. Blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou were consumed more often during the summer months, whereas mackerel Scomber scombrus and Trisopterus spp. (poor cod T minutus, Norway pout T esmarkii, and bib T luscus) were found more often in predator stomachs during the winter half-year. On a spatial scale, blue whiting was consumed over the shelf edge, in accordance with their higher densities in the environment, while mackerel,... |

The ant diversity observed in stomach contents of fossorial reptiles was compared to the subterranean ant richness collected using traditional and modern techniques of ant collections. We analyzed the alimentary tract of 64 specimens of amphisbaenians (4 Amphisbaena alba, 10 A. fuliginosa, 25 A. vermicularis, and 25 Leposternon infraorbitale) collected during the fauna rescue for the construction of Serra da Mesa hydroelectric dam in the Tocantins River (from 1992 to 1997), in Minaçu County, Goiás, Brazil. We found only five ant species present in the stomach contents, all belonging to the army ants subfamily Ecitoninae. In contrast, the traditional techniques for subterranean ants' collection are far more efficient than the exam of fossorial reptile's... |
